Crossing the Border

Can I walk across the Rainbow Bridge without a passport?

No. All travelers 16 and older need a valid Passport, Passport Card, or Enhanced Driver's License (EDL) to cross in either direction. Children under 16 can cross by land with an original or certified birth certificate. A standard driver's license — even a REAL ID — is not sufficient for international border crossing.

Does the Rainbow Bridge take credit cards for the pedestrian toll?

Yes, on the Canadian side. The $1.25 CAD pedestrian toll (collected when leaving Canada) can be paid by tap — Visa, Mastercard, Debit, or Apple Pay — in addition to cash. If you're paying cash, bring exact change: the turnstile does not give change. A coin machine is usually available on-site as a backup.

Sightseeing & Logistics

What is the best free view of Niagara Falls?

On the US side: Prospect Point (at the top of the American Falls) and Terrapin Point on Goat Island (at the brink of Horseshoe Falls) are both free and spectacular. On the Canadian side: The Niagara Parkway sidewalk is free to walk for its entire length, with the best close-up views near Table Rock Centre — arguably the best vantage point on either side.

Is Niagara Falls State Park open in the winter?

Yes — 365 days a year, 24/7. The park never closes. Seasonal attractions like Maid of the Mist shut down from November through April, but the viewing paths, the Cave of the Winds winter experience, and the nightly illumination all remain open. Winter is genuinely one of the most dramatic times to visit, with ice formations building along the gorge.

  • November 1 – December 31: 4:30 PM – 2:00 AM

All times are approximate and subject to light conditions. The illumination is free to view from public areas along the Niagara Parkway and from Niagara Falls State Park.

When are the 2026 Niagara Falls fireworks?

Nightly at 10:00 PM from May 15 through October 12, 2026, weather permitting. They're launched above the American Falls and are visible from both the US and Canadian sides at no charge from public viewing areas.

What is the best way to see the Winter Festival of Lights?

The festival is a free self-guided route along the Niagara Parkway on the Ontario side, best experienced by car or on foot. The centrepiece displays are at Dufferin Islands. Donations are welcomed at the exit to support future festivals. No tickets or reservations required.

Getting Around

Does the WEGO bus run to the Niagara Falls train station?

Yes. The WEGO Green Line connects the VIA Rail and GO Transit station directly to Table Rock Centre and the main attractions along the Niagara Parkway. A 24-hour pass ($16 adult / $12 child) or 48-hour pass is the most cost-effective way to get around the Canadian side without worrying about parking.

Is there a shuttle between the NY and ON sides of the Falls?

No. There is no public transit shuttle that crosses the international border. To get between sides, you need to walk or drive across the Rainbow Bridge individually — with a stop at Customs and Immigration going in both directions. Budget at least 20–30 minutes for the crossing.

Parking

Where can I find cheap parking near the Falls?

New York side: All NY State Park lots are $10/vehicle, paid by credit card only. Lot 3 on Goat Island is free on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays year-round — a genuine insider move if your schedule is flexible.

Ontario side: Avoid the $25–$35+ lots near Clifton Hill. The Rapidsview parking area is significantly cheaper and includes a shuttle to the Falls. It fills up on busy summer days, so arrive early.
