Here’s something most Niagara Falls visitors don’t realize: you can walk from the United States to Canada in about ten minutes for less than the cost of a coffee. The Rainbow Bridge — open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year — is the primary pedestrian connection between Niagara Falls, NY and Niagara Falls, Ontario, and the walk across it offers some of the most spectacular views of all three waterfalls you’ll find anywhere in the region.

Mid-bridge is the sweet spot for photography — from there you can see all three waterfalls at once: the American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls on the US side, and the massive Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side. Stand near the Canadian end and look left for an epic shot of Horseshoe Falls with mist rising.

What you need to know before you go

Passport: A valid passport is the most universally accepted proof of citizenship when crossing from the US into Canada, and is strongly recommended. Enhanced driver’s licenses from NY, MI, VT, and WA are also accepted for US citizens returning to the US — but not for entering Canada. Do not attempt the crossing with just a standard driver’s license — you could find yourself stuck on the bridge. Non-US/Canadian passport holders should check visa and ESTA/eTA requirements before crossing.

The toll: Walking from the US to Canada is free. Walking back from Canada to the US costs $1.00 USD or $1.25 CAD per person, collected at an automated turnstile on the Canadian side before you reach the pedestrian walkway. Payment is accepted via US cash, Canadian cash, or tap (Visa, Mastercard, Debit, Apple Pay). If paying cash, bring quarters — the machine does not always make change easily.

How long does it take: The bridge is 1,450 feet (442 meters) long and takes about 5 to 10 minutes to walk at a leisurely pace. Allow about 30 minutes total to account for border crossing procedures.

Best time to go: Avoid crossing between 8–10 AM, as early morning lineups can stretch to an hour due to flagpoling activity. Also avoid crossing between 4–7 PM when car traffic peaks. Midday or early evening is ideal for both speed and views.

Holiday delays: Expect one hour or more of delays on holidays including Canada Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day weekend.

Step-by-step directions from the NY side

Step 1 — Get to the bridge entrance. The best drop-off point if arriving by car or Uber is the corner of Prospect Street and Niagara Street in Niagara Falls, NY. From Niagara Falls State Park, it’s about a 5-minute walk south along the river. Follow the signs for Rainbow Bridge — it’s well signposted from the park entrance.

Step 2 — Enter the pedestrian walkway. Walk through the entrance plaza on the US side. There is no toll collected here going into Canada — just proceed through.

Step 3 — Cross the bridge. The walk takes about 5–10 minutes. Stop at the midpoint for the best panoramic views and photos — you’ll see a marker indicating the international boundary line between the two countries.

Step 4 — Clear Canadian customs. Present your passport to the Canadian Border Services Agency officer. For most US citizens, this is a quick process — state your purpose, length of stay, and any goods you’re bringing in.

Step 5 — Explore the Canadian side. You’ll emerge on the Ontario side steps from Clifton Hill, the Horseshoe Falls overlook, and the entrance to Journey Behind the Falls. The WeGo Shuttle bus stops near the bridge and can take you to all major Canadian attractions.

Returning to the US: Pay the $1 USD toll at the automated turnstile on the Canadian side, then present your passport to US Customs and Border Protection at the other end.
