What's Open in Niagara Falls in December

December at Niagara Falls is about the lights — the nightly illumination of the Falls, the Winter Festival of Lights along 8 kilometers of the Niagara Parkway, and the fireworks that run every weekend (and nightly over the holidays). Add in low crowds outside of the holiday weeks, dramatically discounted hotels, and the visual spectacle of the Falls in winter, and December is a genuinely compelling time to visit.

New Year's Eve brings two extended fireworks shows — 8pm and midnight — and is one of the better NYE experiences in the region.

Illumination

The Falls are lit every night from dusk — around 5:00–5:15pm in December — through midnight and later on special dates.

Fireworks — Winter Festival of Lights

  • Through December 20: Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00pm
  • December 25 – January 4, 2027: Nightly at 8:00pm
  • December 31 — New Year's Eve: Two shows, 8:00pm and midnight (each extended to 9 minutes)

All fireworks are free to watch from Queen Victoria Park and the Niagara Parkway.

Border Crossing

December is generally easy for crossings, with two exceptions: the week of Christmas (Dec 23–27) and New Year's Eve/Day. Outside of those windows, crossings are often under 5 minutes.

NYE tip: If you're crossing for the midnight fireworks, go over early evening and plan to come back after 1am when the rush clears.

Tolls: $6.00 USD / $8.50 CAD vehicles. $1.25 CAD pedestrians.

Local Tips for December

New Year's Eve is legitimately great. The double fireworks show (8pm and midnight) over the Falls is one of the better NYE options in the region. The Canadian side goes all-in on the evening. Book dinner reservations on the Fallsview strip well ahead of time if that's your plan.

Christmas week is the one exception to "December is quiet." The week between Christmas and New Year's brings families in force. Expect busier conditions than the rest of the month.

Ice formations start building in December. By mid-to-late December, when temperatures drop consistently below freezing, ice starts forming on the rocks and railings near the Falls. The combination of ice formations and the Festival of Lights illumination is genuinely beautiful.

The Festival of Lights through Dufferin Islands. The section of the Festival running through Dufferin Islands (a chain of small wooded islands on the Canadian side) is the quieter, more atmospheric portion of the route. Drive or walk it — the reflections on the water are excellent.

Christmas Day: plan around the closures. Most Niagara Parks indoor attractions are closed on December 25. The Falls themselves are always visible, and the outdoor Festival of Lights continues. Plan your itinerary around this if you're visiting on Christmas.
