What's Open in Niagara Falls in October

October is fall foliage season at Niagara Falls, and the gorge earns it. The colors peak in the third week of October — sugar maples, sumac, and oaks running red and orange down the walls of the gorge — and combined with the Falls at full flow, it's one of the most photogenic times of year.

A few attractions wind down through October, and the fireworks run through mid-month. But the Falls themselves are excellent, the hiking is peak condition, and the crowds are manageable.

Local Tips for October

Peak foliage is the third week of October. The gorge trail on the NY side is the best place to see it — the walls of the gorge funnel the color into a tight, concentrated view. Go on a weekday if you can; fall weekends attract leaf-peepers.

The last fireworks are October 12. If catching the season's final fireworks is on your list, plan accordingly. After this date, the next fireworks are the Winter Festival of Lights in November.

Cave of the Winds closing day matters. The exact date varies by year. If Cave of the Winds is on your list, verify before visiting in late October — it closes before the end of the month some years.

Power Plant Ruins Site closes October 31. One of the most underrated free stops at the Falls — Schoellkopf ruins on the NY side — closes at the end of October. Catch it before it does.
