What's Open in Niagara Falls in May

May is the sweet spot. Everything is opening up, the weather is genuinely pleasant, the crowds haven't hit full summer levels yet, and — most importantly — the fireworks return. May is when Niagara Falls shifts from "quiet season" to "this is why everyone comes here."

If you can visit in May, do it.

The Falls Themselves

Open 24/7, always free on the US side. Goat Island, Prospect Point, all pedestrian areas accessible.

Illumination

The Falls are lit every night from dusk through late evening — around 8:30–9:00pm as the days get long.

Fireworks

Fireworks return in May 2026. The Canadian-side fireworks series runs nightly at 10:00pm over Queen Victoria Park from mid-May through mid-October. Free to watch from the park.

The display is set off from within the Niagara Gorge, between the American and Horseshoe Falls. Best free views: Queen Victoria Park, anywhere along the Niagara Parkway.

Local Tips for May

Early May is the secret window. Before Memorial Day, crowds are genuinely manageable. You get everything open — boat rides, fireworks, Cave of the Winds, Zipline — but without the August chaos. Hotels are still reasonably priced.

Memorial Day weekend = summer rules. The last weekend of May is effectively the start of summer at Niagara Falls. Arrive early, book parking in advance if you can, and expect lines at the major attractions.

Power Plant Ruins site opens May 7. It's free, it's a short walk from the Rainbow Bridge, and almost nobody knows about it. The ruins of the old Schoellkopf Power Plant sit right at the edge of the gorge. Worth the 20 minutes.

The fireworks viewpoint tip: If you're watching from the Canadian side during peak season, position yourself before the show starts. When the 10pm fireworks end, everyone moves at once. Having your spot secured saves you a lot of grief.
